Hearing Aid Batteries

At Lisburn Hearing Centre, we provide a wide range of batteries for powering hearing aids, we are a long established local Independent business since 2006, giving time and continued support to our clients on their better hearing journey.

Traditionally, hearing aids have been powered with small disposable batteries, but nowadays they tend to use rechargeable batteries that are longer lasting, more efficient and environmentally friendly. At Lisburn Hearing Centre, we can advise you on the best battery suitable for your hearing aid device and needs.

Disposable Hearing Aid Batteries

Disposable hearing aid batteries are usually zinc-air operated, meaning that the zinc in the battery interacts with the oxygen in the air in order to start powering the hearing aid device.

The battery is kept inactive until the factory seal sticker is removed, once the sticker has been removed the battery cannot be turned off again, it is a single use, disposable battery. It’s also best to wait around a minute before you place the disposal battery in the hearing aid device.

Disposable hearing aid batteries come in four different sizes; they are all smaller than a five pence coin. Manufacturers are also required to colour code battery sizes by law, allowing users to easily identify their hearing aid battery.

The different types of disposal hearing aid batteries and their colour codes, include:

Colour Size Dimensions Uses Lifespan
Blue 675 11.6mm x 5.4mm BTE 9 - 20 days
Orange 13 7.9mm x 5.4mm BTE
ITE
6 - 14
days
Brown 312 7.9mm x 3.6mm Mini BTE
RITE
ITC
3 - 10
days
Yellow 10 5.8mm x 3.6mm Mini RTE
CIC
3 - 7
days

In order to get the best lifespace from your disposal batteries, it's best to store them at room temperature and avoid humid environments like bathrooms. You should also leave the battery compartment door open overnight, to reduce moisture and avoid contact with other metal objects that may short-circuit the battery.

Rechargeable Hearing Aid

Rechargeable hearing aids are quite common, but they are generally only available for behind-the-ear style hearing aids. Users are required to charge them overnight in order to keep them functional and they usually come with their own docking station for charging.

It’s also important to remember that you need to be near a power source in order to charge the batteries.

Rechargeable hearing aids are efficient and reliable for the user and also better for the environment, compared to disposable ones.
