Hearing Loss Can Be A Factor Leading To Dementia Finds Study

Friday, August 11th 2017 2:32pm

A recent international study which has been published in the Lancet has found that there are 9 key risk factors which can lead to the onset of dementia and hearing loss is one of those factors. This shows how important regular hearing checks are once we move into middle age and older.

9 Risk Factors For Dementia

Hearing Loss A Risk Factor In Dementia

The 9 risk factors for dementia which we are sharing with you below and which have been published in a BBC News article, are the factors that are modifiable for people, and they add up to 35% of the overall risk. The study found that there was 65% other factors which are non modifiable and so people just have to concentrate on the issues that can be affected by them. The 9 factors which can contribute to dementia are:
  • Mid-life hearing loss - responsible for 9% of the risk
  • Failing to complete secondary education - 8%
  • Smoking - 5%
  • Failing to seek early treatment for depression - 4%
  • Physical inactivity - 3%
  • Social isolation - 2%
  • High blood pressure - 2%
  • Obesity - 1%
  • Type 2 diabetes - 1%

As you can see hearing loss is the one with the highest percentage of risk when it comes to dementia. The report found that people who suffer hearing loss in middle age can often become socially isolated if they don`t do anything to alleviate the problem. If they are not using their cognitive skills the brain is not getting the exercise it requires to stay healthy and isolation can also lead to depression in the hard of hearing. So hearing loss can have a knock on effect on many peoples general health.

Reducing The Risk Of Dementia

There are many things that we can all do to reduce the chances of getting dementia, and these include making sure we get enough exercise and staying fit, eating healthy foods and not smoking, and staying sociable and involved with other people. And we must ensure our hearing is not impaired and if it is make sure we are fitted with a good quality hearing aid which will help us stay connected with the outside world.
